Assignment 5: Illustrator Presentation: Eric Carle


Born June 25, 1929 (87 years old) in Syracuse, NY.  Family moved to Germany when he was 6 where his father and he served in the war. He later moved back to NYC in 1952 with only $40 and a dream. Still makes appearances and speaks and creates work where he lives on the east coast.
Worked as an advertiser, graphic designer, and art director. A very recognizable style – graduated from the prestigious art school, the Akademie der bildenden Kunste, in Stuttgart. This is the ad for Red Lobster that caught the attention of Bill Martian who commissioned him for his first book.

Always creating, always experimenting.
Lead to the first book he wrote and illustrated himself. "The Very Hungry Caterpillar."
1969. He was 40 years old. It has since sold 44 million copies and been published in 62 languages.
He has now Illustrated more than 70 books. He Illustrates primarily children's books because he likes to help children along the difficult path of growing up.
